“My art teacher had said that if you breathed deeply and imagined something, you could be there. You could see it, feel it. During our standoffs with the NKVD, I learned to do that. I clung to my rusted dreams during the times of silence. It was at gunpoint that I fell into every hope and allowed myself to wish from the deepest part of my heart. Komorov thought he was torturing us. But we were escaping into a stillness within ourselves. We found strength there.” IfsFeelsHeartArtSaidDreamFoundWishSilenceTeacherMy HeartStillnessEscapingArt TeacherStandoffs Book:Between Shades of Gray Source: Between Shades of Gray
“My teacher introduced me to this photographer Eugène Atget. He was a French photographer in the late 1800s up until 1927 in Paris. He didn't consider himself an artist, but he was probably one of the artists of the 20th century. This guy documented all of Paris during those years. It's unbelievable. The books are phenomenal. The Museum of Modern Art has all his stuff now and [American photographer] Berenice Abbott saved his work. Not very much is known about his life, but the work is unreal and it totally spoke to me. He was the only artist for a number of years that I cared about at all.” YearsArtBookArtistGuyStuffNumbersKnownTeacherModernCenturyLatePhotographerSavedParisSpokesMuseums20th CenturyUnbelievableThis GuyUnrealPhenomenalModern Art Author:Jeff Vespa
“There are writers you admire, for the skill or the art, for the inventiveness or for the professionalism of a career well spent. And there are writers-sometimes the same ones, sometimes not-to whom you are powerfully attracted, for reasons that may or may not have to do with literary values. They speak to you, or speak for you, sometimes with a voice that could almost be your own. Often there is one writer in particular who awakens you, who is the teacher they say you will meet when you are ready for the lesson.” WellsMayArtSometimesReasonValuesSpeakVoiceCareersTeacherParticularReadyLessonsSkillsAdmireProfessionalismInventiveness Author:James D. “Some teachers should be put in prison for the way they either take advantage of women in their classes or destroy fragile egos. Be careful who you ask to help you when you're in the arts.” WayShouldArtHelpingAsksClassTeacherEgoAdvantagePrisonCarefulFragileBe Careful Author:Mandy Patinkin
“Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit. My three [great teachers] did not tell - they catalyzed a burning desire to know. Under their influence, the horizons sprung wide and fear went away and the unknown became knowable. But most important of all, the truth, that dangerous stuff, became beautiful and very precious.” KnowsMindHumansArtImportantMightBeautifulSpiritDesireThreeStuffTeacherInfluenceTeachingDangerousWideMediumsBurningHorizonHuman MindGreat TeacherSprungBurning Desire Author:John Steinbeck
“We honor ambition, we reward greed, we celebrate materialism, we worship acquisitiveness, we commercialize art, we cherish success and then we bark at the young about the gentle arts of the spirit. The kids know that if we really valued learning, we would pay our teachers what we pay our lawyers and stockbrokers. If we valued art, we would not measure it by its capacity to produce profits. If we regarded literature as important, we would remove it from the celebrity sweepstakes and spend a little money on our libraries.” IfsKnowsLittlesArtImportantKidsYoungSpiritLiteraturePayTeacherProduceHonorAmbitionWorshipCapacityRewardsLibraryGreedProfitLawyerCelebrateGentleRemoveMaterialismCherishBarkLittle MoneyStockbrokersSweepstakes Author:Russell Baker
