“The scent organ was playing a delightfully refreshing Herbal Capriccio - rippling arpeggios of thyme and lavender, of rosemary, basil, myrtle, tarragon; a series of daring modulations through the spice keys into ambergris; and a slow return through sandalwood, camphor, cedar and newmown hay (with occasional subtle touches of discord - a whiff of kidney pudding, the faintest suspicion of pig's dung) back to the simple aromatics with which the piece began. The final blast of thyme died away; there was a round of applause; the lights went up.” LightSimplePiecesKeysReturnDiedSeriesFinalsRoundsSubtleCulinaryDaringOrgansSuspicionPigsScentOccasionalApplauseSpicesBlastRefreshingDiscordKidneysPuddingHayLavenderCedarsRosemaryMyrtleBasilThymeSandalwood Book:The Collected Works of Aldous Huxley: Brave new world Source: The Collected Works of Aldous Huxley: Brave new world
“There is so much information that our ability to focus on any piece of it is interrupted by other information, so that we bathe in information but hardly absorb or analyse it. Data are interrupted by other data before we've thought about the first round, and contemplating three streams of data at once may be a way to think about none of them.” ThinkingWayFirstsMayThreeAbilityFocusPiecesInformationRoundsDataStreamsContemplatingInterrupted Author:Rebecca Solnit
“My grandmother's feet had been bound when she was two years old. Her mother...first wound a piece of white cloth about twenty feet long round her feet, bending all the toes except the big toe inward and under the sole. Then she placed a large stone on top to crush the arch.” YearsFirstsLongTwoBigsMotherWhitePiecesFeetStonesTwentiesBoundsRoundsChinaWoundsCrushGrandmotherTwo YearsSoleInwardToesMy GrandmotherArchesBendingTwo Year Olds Author:Jung Chang
“The one thing you can rely on is if you get disturbed halfway through a painting and it looks a bit naff, then someone will preserve that piece, remove it and a few months later it'll be paraded round Sotheby's by people wearing white gloves.” PeopleIfsLooksBitsWhitePiecesOne ThingPaintingMonthsRoundsPreservesRelyRemoveHalfwayDisturbedGlovesWearing White Author:Banksy
“Aomori Water is a sound collage piece made in 1998, in Aomori Japan. I was in a residency with other artists. A Japanese sculptor was making a round house and wanted a sound piece to play in it. I recorded some very gentle waves lapping the beach, for the first part. And a very small mountain stream, flowing, for the second part. I layered 8 tracks. This was the first work that I did in ProTools.” FirstsMadePlayWantedArtistHouseSoundWaterPiecesMountainRoundsWaveTrackBeachGentleStreamsJapanSculptorsCollagesResidencyMountain Streams Author:Phill Niblock
“It is a common experience that attempts to solve just one piece of a problem first, then others, and so on, lead to endless involutions. You no sooner solve one aspect of a thing, than another point is out of point. And when you correct that one, something else goes wrong. You go round and round in circles, unable to produce a form that is thoroughly right.” FirstsProblemFormCommonPiecesProduceAspectRoundsSolveCirclesEndlessJust OneOne PieceCommon Experience Author:Christopher Alexander
