“You said you love me.' 'And?' She cocked an eyebrow. Hunt's mouth twitched upward. 'It was said under duress.' She bit her lip. He wanted to plant his teeth there. 'Are you asking whether I meant it, or do you think you're that good with your mouth that I went out of my mind?' He flicked her nose. 'Smart-ass.' She flopped back onto the mattress. 'They're both true.”

“You said you wouldn't bed me tonight." Her voice sounded small, fearful. She hated it. "I'm not. I'm merely going to help you to your feet." She placed her hand in his. Hers seemed so tiny, and when he closed his fingers around it, she was incredibly aware that he could easily break her with very little effort. She was surprised by the coarseness of his flesh. These were not the hands of a gentleman. He drew her up, then expertly moved her arm behind her back, somehow snagging her other wrist until both were held within his firm grasp. With his free hand, he cradled her face, stroked her cheek with his thumb. "You will learn to do things as I like them done," he said softly, in a voice that promised pleasures. His eyes captured and held hers, and she thought that even if he wasn't holding her, she'd not have been able to break away. "I have particular needs. The first is that you are never to wrap your arms around me." "Why not?" she whispered. "Because it's what I require." He lowered his lips to hers, and she realized that if he hadn't manacled her wrists that her arms would have twined about him of their own accord, simply to ensure that she remained standing when her knees grew so weak. His tongue toyed with her mouth, painting it, outlining it as though he wanted to be intimately familiar with it. Then he was urging her lips apart and delving into the depths of her mouth with an urgency that astounded her. He might not like her, but it was becoming plain enough rather quickly that he was quite fond of her mouth. He explored every inch of it, every nook, every cranny, every hidden corner. When she dared to meet the thrust of his tongue with a thrust of her own, he groaned low and pressed her against his broad chest. Through the thin linen of his shirt and the maid's well-worn nightly attire, she could feel the thudding of his heart, sense its increase in tempo. When she tried to break free of his hold, his hand clamped harder on her wrists, just shy of causing pain.”

“You said, 'I love you.' Why is it that the most unoriginal thing we can say to one another is still the thing we long to hear? 'I love you' is always a quotation. You did not say it first and neither did I, yet when you say it and when I say it we speak like savages who have found three words and worship them. I did worship them but now I am alone on a rock hewn out of my own body.”

“You said, 'I'm going to leave him because my love for you makes any other life a lie.' I've hidden these words in the lining of my coat. I take them out like a jewel thief when no-one's watching. They haven't faded. Nothing about you has faded. You are still the colour of my blood. You are my blood. When I look in the mirror it's not my own face I see. Your body is twice. Once you once me. Can I be sure which is which?”

“You saved me, again.” I glanced around, thankful no one was around or they would have been staring. I felt so stupid in his arms. Small, weak, and klutzy. The side of Brett’s mouth quirked as his brows pulled together. “Again?” “Last night,” I murmured, looking back at him as he set me down beside him. “You’re like a knight—always there when I need you.” “I’m no knight, Colt. Far from it—you know that.” ”Robin Hood, then.” He chuckled.”

“You saved me," he said, his voice cracking a little. Haven smiled, completely overwhelmed y his perfection of the moment. "We saved each other." Dare heaved a deep, shaky breath. "You're pretty fucking awesome. You know that?" he asked. Her smile slipped into a grin. "I really a." He gave a little coughing laugh and groaned at the same time. "Can't...laugh," he gasped. "I'm sorry." She stroked his hair off his face. "Don't ever be sorry for making me happy, Haven. Because you do. Happier than I've ever been in my life. I didn't realize how little I'd been living all these years until you came along. So, yeah, we saved each other. And I just can't let you go. Not today. Not ever." Which was exactly what Haven wanted to hear. "That's all I need, Dare. You're all I need. We'll figure the rest out." His fingers toyed clumsily with a long strand of her hair. "Yeah, we fucking will," he said, strength filtering into his voice. "One day, one night, one ride at a time.”
