Ghiacciai e mari, il Carso e i campi di grano della Boemia, notti sull’Adriatico percorse dallo stridio inquieto dei grilli, e villaggi slovacchi dove il fumo usciva dai camini come da narici camuse e il villaggio se ne stava rannicchiato tra due collinette, quasi che la terra avesse dischiuso un poco le labbra per riscaldare il suo bambino. Naturalmente su quelle strade si incontravano anche automobili; ma non troppe. Ci si preparava anche là alla conquista dell’aria; ma senza eccedere in solerzia. Di quando in quando si faceva partire una nave per il Sudamerica o per l’Estremo Oriente; ma non troppo spesso. Non si ambiva al dominio del mondo, né dal punto di vista economico né da quello politico; si era al centro dell’Europa, dove si intersecano gli antichi assi del mondo; le parole “colonia” e “oltremare” risuonavano ancora come un qualcosa di remoto e di non sperimentato. Si viveva nel lusso, ma di certo non con l’estrema raffinatezza dei francesi. Si praticava lo sport, ma non da forsennati come gli anglosassoni. Si spendevano somme ingenti per l’esercito, ma solo quel tanto che bastava per esser certi di rimanere la penultima delle grandi potenze. Anche la capitale, pur essendo una delle città più grandi del mondo, era un po’ più piccola di tutte le altre, ma notevolmente più grande di quanto lo siano di solito le grandi città. E l’amministrazione di questo paese, illuminata, discreta, volta a smussare prudentemente tutti gli spigoli, era nelle mani della migliore burocrazia d’Europa, alla quale si poteva rimproverare un solo difetto: ritenere saccenteria e presunzione il genio e la geniale intraprendenza dei privati che non fossero legittimati a ciò dal privilegio di alti natali o di un incarico statale. E d’altronde, c’è forse qualcuno cui piaccia farsi comandare da chi non è autorizzato? In Kakania, poi, un genio passava sempre per uno sciocco, ma a differenza di quel che capitava dalle altre parti, non succedeva mai che uno sciocco passasse per un genio.”

En famille, on est quelqu'un. Vous n'imaginez pas comme Caroline imite bien Chaplin, ni comme Rudi est irritable. Et quel sens de l'humour, dans toute la famille ! Ce qui, partout ailleurs, n'aurait rien d'humoristique déclenche ici des rires retentissants, on ne saurait dire pourquoi ; c'est drôle, voilà tout, n'est-ce pas l'essentiel en matière d'humour ? Plus elle est chaleureuse, plus elle se montre dure pour tout ce qui n'est est pas elle, et elle est toujours plus cruelle qu'un être confronté seul à la souffrance du monde. En cantonnant la gloire dans son cercle restreint, où elle est faceil à atteindre (« gloire de la famille »), elle endort l'ambition. Et parce que tous les événements familiaux suscitent une tristesse plus profonde ou une joie plus éclatante qu'ils ne le méritent réellement, parce qu'en famille ce qui n'a rien d'humoristique devient de l'humour, et des peines insignifiantes à l'échelle collective, un malheur personnel, elle est le berceau de toute l'ineptie qui imprègne notre vie publique. Il y aurait encore long à en dire et on l'a dit parfois, mais jamais en des jours comme celui-ci.”

“In Austria il patriottismo era un argomento tutto particolare. E, scambiati i ruoli e apportate le opportune modifiche, si insegnavano esattamente le stesse cose ai bambini francesi, russi e inglesi, che vantavano anche loro parecchie vittorie. Ora, i bambini sono dei fanfaroni, amano giocare a guardie e ladri e, qualora ne facciano parte, sono sempre pronti a ritenere la famiglia Y, residente nella grande via X, la più importante famiglia del mondo. È dunque facile conquistarli al patriottismo. In Austria invece la faccenda era un po’ più complicata. Gli austriaci infatti avevano sì vinto tutte le guerre della loro storia, ma dopo la maggior parte di esse avevano dovuto cedere qualche territorio. Una circostanza, questa, che induce alla riflessione, e Ulrich, nel suo componimento sull’amor di patria, scrisse che un vero patriota non deve mai reputare la propria patria la migliore di tutte; anzi, in un lampo di genio che gli parve particolarmente bello, benché fosse piuttosto abbagliato dal suo splendore che non consapevole del suo effettivo contenuto, a quella frase sospetta ne aveva aggiunta un’altra, e cioè che probabilmente anche Dio preferisce parlare del suo mondo al conjunctivus potentialis (hic dixerit quispiam qui si potrebbe obiettare…), perché Dio crea il mondo e intanto pensa che esso potrebbe benissimo essere diverso. Di questa frase era molto fiero, ma forse nel formularla non si era spiegato bene, perché ne era nata una gran confusione, e per poco non lo avevano espulso dalla scuola, anche se poi non fu preso alcun provvedimento, nell’impossibilità di decidere se quell’audace osservazione fosse un oltraggio alla patria o a Dio”
