“In „The Secret of Secrets“, al-Jilani refers to the Hadith Qudsi, where God speaks through His Messenger, peace be upon him: „Man is My secret and I am his secret. The inner knowledge of the spiritual essence (ilm al-batin) is a secret of My secrets. Only I put this into the heart of My good servant, and none may know his state other than Me.“ (p. 192)”

“Love makes us speak; love makes us moan; love makes us die; love brings us to life; love makes us drunk and bewildered; it sometimes makes one a king. Love and the lover have no rigid doctrine. Whichever direction the lover takes he turns toward his beloved. Wherever he may be, he is with his beloved. Wherever he goes, he goes with his beloved. He cannot do anything, cannot survive for one moment even, without his beloved. He constantly recalls his beloved, as his beloved remembers him. Lover and beloved, rememberer and remembered, are ever in each other’s company, always together.”

“The flame of the mystic‘s heart is love of God and compassion for all of God‘s creatures […] the gnostic‘s love for humanity engulfs the entire world. Distinctions are of no account in this love. The gnostic invokes God‘s mercy equally on sinners and saints, men and women, and people of all races, nations and religions. (p. 199)”

“To attain the reality of unity, the believer must undergo deeper and deeper self-forgetting in the remembrance of God. There is no god but God now comes to mean, "there is no existing thing but God." Someone asked Sa'd ad-din Hamuya, "What is God?" He answered, "That which exists is God." The questioner asked, "What is the world?" He answered, "Nothing exists but God." (p. 225)”

“The greatest of the lovers, however, are those who constantly seek to augment their knowledge, in keeping with the Quranic command: „Say: „My Lord, increase me in knowledge“ (20:114). They increase their knowledge by never denying God‘s presence in any phenomenon and by never affirming his presence in anything whatsoever. Seeing with both eyes, they constantly recognize that all is „He/not He.“ They never let themselves fall into stasis and fixity, but flow with the constant unfolding of the universe. They recognize themselves and all things for what they are. (p.34)”

“Therefore, in this seemingly patriarchal mystery tradition (Sûfîsm), we see that woman is the Hidden Initiatrix, the Shadow Guide, the Blackness that births the Light. 'Da tariki, tariqat' - "In the darkness, the Path," is a Sufic maxim. The void has been described as a dark cave, a shadowy mihrab, the Concealed or Secret Radiance, the Black Stone of the Ka'ba, Ghayb ul-Ghaib ( Mystery of Mysteries ), Amma (Darkness), and returning to the Womb of Fatima ('Alaiha Assalam) the Mother.”

“The ecological crisis is only an externalization of an inner malaise and cannot be solved without a spiritual rebirth of Western man […] It is still our hope that as the crisis created by man's forgetfulness of who he really is grows and that as the idols of his own making crumble one by one before his eyes, he will begin a true reform of himself, which always means a spiritual rebirth and through his rebirth attain a new harmony with the world of nature around him. Otherwise, it is hopeless to expect to live in harmony with that grand theophany which is virgin nature, while remaining oblivious and indifferent to the Source of that theophany both beyond nature and at the centre of man's being […] Few are willing to look reality in the face and accept the fact that there is no peace possible in human society as long as the attitude toward nature and the whole natural environment is one based on aggression and war. Furthermore, perhaps not all realize that in order to gain this peace with nature there must be peace with the spiritual order. To be at peace with the Earth one must be at peace with Heaven.”

“Birds never know (Sonnet) Birds never know if the sun will rise, yet they sing everyday right before dawn. And sure enough the night collapses, into the arms of the rising sun. Kiss the world like morning sun, Sing to the sky like waking birds. Fret not the fears of wild insecurity, You do your task with dutybound heart. Touch the soul like summer breeze, Hug the soil like monsoon rain. Life is calling, can't you hear! Universe awaits your humane reign.”

“To think about our bodies as horses to be ridden or even temples to be occupied, is to create a duality between our thinking and our body. It is like a tourist who arrives in a wild forest in his or her Recreation Vehicle. We have all see those campers with their televisions, and so on. Are they experiencing the nature around them? They have an insular experience, that is, camping without getting their hands dirty.”

“It seems to me that apart from the aptness of the Malay language in the construction of four-lined verses with a AAAA pattern of rhyme, the influence of Ibnu’l-‘Arabi’s and ‘Iraqi’s four-line shi’r and Jami’s ruba’i, the concept of the bayt and the shi’r in Arabic and Persian prosody, the creative genius of the poet, Hamzah’s choice of the four-line shi’r composed of a single bayt could well have been influenced also by the symbolism in the Sufi doctrines.”

“The analogy of the fourfold Law Way, Truth and Gnosis in which they are compared to a house may be said to be a static one, and this is because what is aimed at here is comprehension of the concept of the absolute unity of the Way to the Truth; but the spiritual journey itself is a dynamic concept, and hence sometimes the fourfold unity of the Way to the Truth is also to a ship (kapal) whose keel is like the Law, whose planks are like the Way, whose content or merchandise is like the Truth and whose gain is like the spiritual gain of Gnosis.”

“Saints seem to be enjoying and welcoming trials because it helps them prove their loyalty to the beloved. The immature seekers often misinterpret it and start treating it like a rule that one is supposed to starve, torture oneself to grow spiritually, even if they get mentally unfit and physically crippled in the process, and eventually spoil their growth prospects, due to their own foolishness. The philosophy that lies at the core of this belief is 'The worldly is bad', 'Material self should be discouraged to grow spiritually' and therefore the seeker should run away from everything worldly and disappear in the jungle to grow spiritually.”

“It is a great mistake to say that the thorn does not have anything to do with the rose, or that the thorn is the absence of the rose. The thorn is as much rose bush as the rose is. The thorn has as much validity as the rose. Let this Rose Bush be the symbol of the Heart of Real Spirituality. We are not asking you to like the thorn, but we are asking you to see it as an expression of Allah.”
