“Hugh just dropped off the cheese selection for the week. I thought you'd like to sample?"
I perked up immediately. Sampling cheese sounded fun. I was starving. The Hobnobs hadn't been particularly filling. The light, airy dining room was a beehive of activity. Four servers buzzed around, readying tables, wrapping silverware. Outside someone was watering the ornamental cabbages. I sat at a table with Chandice and tasted a half dozen local cheeses. A sharp English cheddar with a bite that lingered just at the hint of your jaw, a creamy goat cheese lavished with a sweet onion chutney. Stuffing the last of a very toothsome local blue cheese into my mouth, I looked around at the happy bustle with satisfaction. This is what I had always dreamed of, this bright hive of positive energy.”

“Hugh paid no more attention to the farce than he had to the opera. He took every opportunity to study the young woman sitting beside him. She didn't hide her amusement at the production on stage, laughing at the pranks of the fool and clapping one hand to her mouth when the hero fell to his knee and proclaimed his love for the fainting maiden. Hugh sensed it was all genuine, as genuine as her nerves and her devotion to Willy and even her welcoming words to him this evening.”

“Hugh refused to leave the scene of the action. He seated himself on the top stair in the hall, banged his head against the railing a few times, just by way of uncorking the vials of his wrath, and then subsided into gloomy silence, waiting to declare war if more “first girl babies” were thrust upon a family already surfeited with that unnecessary article.”

“Hugh Renaday also stood nearby. But the Canadian had his head turned skyward, his gaze sweeping the wide blue horizon. After a moment, he spoke softly. "On a day like this, visibility unlimited, you know, if you just look up for a long enough time, you can almost forget where you are."
Both Tommy's and Lincoln Scott's eyes turned up, following the Canadian's. After a second's silence, Scott laughed out loud. "Damn it, I think you're almost right." He paused, then added, "It's almost like for just a couple of heartbeats you can kid yourself that you're free again."
"It would be nice," Tommy said. "Even the illusion of freedom."
"It would be nice," Scott repeated softly. "It's one of those rare things in life where the lie is far more encouraging than the truth.”

“Hugh returned from his trip, and days later I still sounded like a Red Chinese asking questions about the democratic hinterlands. "And you actually saw people smoking in restaurants? Really! “Huh, I thought that a woman was bad luck on a ship." Ben looked at Emma.
"Well, Emma's not really a woman, see," Bones said.
"She's not?" Ben asked in surprise.
"Well, no, not exactly."
"Well, then, what is she?"
"Well, she's... she's more of like... well, sort of a captain," Bones finally concluded.
"A captain?" Ben rolled his eyes.
"Yeah, that's it," Bones nodded.
Suddenly, a cannon fired. Joe Salty realized that he had set the cannon off by accident and looked fearfully at Emma. She swooped down to him and held her sword to his throat.
"Shooting at anything in particular, Mr. Salty?" Emma questioned.
"Um... just testing it, Cap'n," Joe sputtered.
"Well, don't be wasting ammunition on a stupid thing like that again, or you'll be visiting Davy Jones real soon," she warned. With that, she jumped onto the top deck and began to climb the rigging.
Ben turned to Bones. "You're right. She's definitely not a woman.”

“No,” said the faerie. “I’m Mark’s lover.”
Oh, Kit thought. The person he went into Faerie to save. He tried to stifle a look of amusement at the way faeries talked. Intellectually, he knew the word “lover” was part of traditional speech, but he couldn’t help it: He was from Los Angeles, and as far as he was concerned, Kieran had just said, Hello, I have sex with Mark Blackthorn. What about you?”

“Huh,” she said in a neutral voice, then looked out over the pasture again, at the sheep racing through the grass like frantic clouds. A defiant expression crossed her face, and she took a breath.
“Razor!” she barked, making Keirran jump. “No! Bad gremlin! You stop that, right now!”
The gremlin, shockingly, looked up from where he was bouncing on a rock, sheep scattering around him. He blinked and cocked his head, looking confused. Kenzie pointed to the ground in front of her.
“I want to see you. Come here, Razor,. Now!”
And, he did. Blipping into sight at her feet, he gazed up expectantly, looking like a mutant Chihuahua awaiting commands. Keirran blinked in astonishment as she snapped her fingers and pointed at him, and Razor scurried up his arm to perch on his shoulder. She smiled, giving us both a smug look, and crossed her arms.

“You’re not really good at your job. You didn’t help me at all during the mission.”
“The signal was jammed, Guardian.”
“But you work for the intelligence bureau. Shouldn’t you have thought of something crafty that could’ve aided me?” she asked curiously.
“I don’t know how to respond to that question.” Wheeler said in an appalled manner, not knowing how this conversation reached this point of bewilderment.
“That’s not an intelligent response. And, I still have no clue on who you are.”

“Huh," Leo said. "Well, if you ever get off this island and want a job, let me know. You're not a total klutz." She smirked. "A job, eh?" Making things in your forge?" “Her heart is full of feeling for you, but she knows it is wrong for her to stay with you. She wishes for you to find a white woman who will fit into your life and be the wife you need.”
Alan started shaking his head before Dong Li even finished translating. “No. Tell her she makes me happy. She is exactly the wife I need.” He breathed deeply, steadying the quaver in his voice. “Ask Chua Huiann if she will do me the honor of marrying me.”
Dong clicked his tongue, but offered Alan’s proposal.
Huiann’s eyes opened wide and she spoke rapidly.
“How would your family and your people react to you marrying a foreign bride? You would be ostracized. It cannot be.” Dong added his own thoughts to the translation. “The girl speaks sense and sees more clearly than you.”
Alan frowned. He couldn’t promise his family would accept Huiann or ever welcome them home as a couple, but he didn’t care. Maybe she was seeing reason, but he was only seeing her.”
