“The leaves' autumn colors were muted in the shadows they settled among.”
“The leaves did not stir on the trees, grasshoppers chirruped, and the monotonous hollow sound of the sea rising up from below, spoke of the peace, of the eternal sleep awaiting us. So it must have sounded when there was no Yalta, no Oreanda here; so it sounds now, and it will sound as indifferently and monotonously when we are all no more. And in this constancy, in this complete indifference to the life and death of each of us, there lies hid, perhaps, a pledge of our eternal salvation, of the unceasing movement of life upon earth, of unceasing progress towards perfection.”
“The leaves do not change color from the blighting touch of the frost, but from the process of natural decay. They fall when the fruit has been ripened and their work is done. And their splendid change of coloring is but their graceful and beautiful surrender of life, when they have finished their summer offering of service to God and man.”
“The leaves fall patiently
Nothing remembers or grieves
The river takes to the sea
The yellow drift of leaves.”

“The leaves hop, scraping on the ground. It is deep January. The sky is hard. The stalks are firmly rooted in ice. It is in this solitude, a syllable, Out of these gawky flitterings, Intones its single emptiness, The savagest hollow of winter-sound.”

“The leaves of the maples along the highway were beginning to turn red, orange and yellow. Whole cornfields lay bare once again. Summer was drawing to a close.
On his way to Bar Harbor, Nick thought his life, too, was drawing to a close. He felt alone and unloved. He wondered if anyone would even miss him.
But then he got spun around, and he began to understand that he was neither alone nor unloved. No one had left him or stopped loving him. They were simply waiting for him.
Rays of sunlight streamed through gaps in the clouds. They made Nick think of his mother and what she had told him about grace being his salvation.
Now, he felt filled with grace. And he chose not to think of his failings or even the exciting opportunities ahead, his past or his future, his exodus or his journey home.
Instead, Nick chose to pay attention to the road and simply drive.”

“The leaves of the trees are like the thoughts of the men: Some are bright, some dark; some fresh, some rotten; some healthy, some diseased.”
“The leaves of these [larch] trees are like those of the pine; timber from them comes in long lengths, is as easily wrought in joiner's work as is the clearwood of fir, and contains a liquid resin, of the color of Attic honey, which is good for consumptives.”
“The leaves on the Tree of Life are for the healing of the nations, but what are the fruits for?-They must be just for the pleasure of eating!”
“The leaves spring green tips floated by, caressing softly countless gentle beings”
“The leaves streamed down, trembling in the sun. They were not green, only a few, scattered through the torrent, stood out in single drops of green so bright and pure that it hurt the eyes; the rest were not a color, but a light, the substance of fire on metal, living sparks without edges. And it looked as if the forest were a spread of light boiling slowly to produce this color, the green rising in small bubbles, the condensed essence of spring. The trees met, blending over the road and the spots of sun on the ground moved with the shifting of the branches, like a conscious caress.”

“The leaves that are green turn to brown. And they wither with the wind. And they crumble in your hand.”
“The leaves were miniature green umbrellas dancing in the spring's sky. Each leaf was in time within the windy choreographed dance. Their branch partners flowed naturally to the rhythmic beat. Controlled with each passing gust that flowed gently through the lofty tree.”
“The leaving happened slowly, gradually, as these things do, and before we knew it, we were lost to each other, as if a magician had whisked a cloth off the table, leaving the dishes there, jolted. And when we looked back it was all a blur, time on fast forward, hurtling to an inevitable conclusion.”

“The Lebanese American poet Kahlil Gibran wrote, "The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain." The catastrophes that carve themselves deep inside of us also leave us with increased depth, augmenting the volume of feeling we're able to hold. And how can we measure devotion but by how much the vessels that we become for our art, faith, saviors, and crusades have the capacity to contain?”

“The lecture halls of the world are filled with senior citizens who seek greater knowledge and wisdom. The explanatory drive that was there when they were babies is still there now.
Wisdom at this phase of life is the ability to see the connections between things. It’s the ability to hold opposite truths—contradictions and paradoxes—in the mind at the same time, without wrestling to impose some linear order. It’s the ability to see things from multiple perspectives.”

“The lectures you deliver
may be wise and true,
But I'd rather get my lessons
by observing what you do.
I may not understand
the high advise you like to give,
But there's no misunderstanding
how you act and how you live.”

“The ledger’s double-entry pages and the neat grid of the invoice gave purposeful shape to the story they told. Through their graphic simplicity and economy, invoices and ledgers effaced the personal histories that fueled the slaving economy. Containing only what could fit within the clean lines of their columns and rows, they reduced an enormous system of traffic in human commodities to a concise chronicle of quantitative ‘facts.’ Thus, Mary Poove writes, ‘like the closet, the conventions of double-entry bookkeeping were intended to manage or contain excess.’ Instruments such as these did their work, then, while concealing the messiness of history, erasing from view the politics that underlay the neat account keeping.
The slave traders (and much of the modern economic literature on the slave trade) regarded the slave ship’s need for volume as a self-evident ‘fact’ of economic rationalization: the Board of Trade’s reports, the balance pursued in the Royal African Company’s double-entry ledgers, the calculations that determined how many captive bodies a ship could ‘conveniently stow,’ the simple equation by which an agent at the company’s factory at Whydah promised ‘to Complie with delivering in every ten days 100 Negroes.’ But the perceptions of the African captives themselves differed from the slave trader’s economies of scale and rationalized efficiency of production. What appears in the European quantitative account as a seamless expansion in the volume of slave exports—evidence of the natural workings of the market—took the form of violent rifts in the political geography of the Gold Coast. People for whom the Atlantic market had been a distant and hazy presence with little direct consequence for their lives now found themselves swept up in wars and siphoned into a type of captivity without precedent.”

“The left - which is run by Obama and Hillary Clinton and the hierarchy in the Democrat Party - is doing everything they can to undermine, to sabotage, and to prevent Trump from implementing his agenda. There's no question about it.”
“The "left" ABC (Anything But Class) theorists say we are giving too much attention to class. Who exactly is doing that? Surveying the mainstream academic publications, radical journals, and socialist scholars conferences, one is hard put to find much class analysis of any kind. Far from giving too much attention to class power, most U.S. writers and commentators have yet to discover the subject. While pummeling a rather minuscule Marxist Left, the ABC theorists would have us think they are doing courageous battle against hordes of Marxists who dominate intellectual discourse in this country-yet another hallucination they hold in common with conservatives”

“The left and Democrats are relying on the decline the American character that left-wing policies have produced.”
“The left and the media hope Trump is doing a Nixon in the White House. They wish he's in the corner with an adult beverage at night talking to himself because of all the misery and all the hatred. They think he desperately wants to be loved and he's figuring out that he's hated. But that is so far from the truth. Trump is reveling in it and enjoying it. I think Trump was fully aware that this was going to happen.”
“The left and the right live in parallel universes. The right listens to talk radio, the left's on the Internet and they just reinforce one another. They have no sense of reality. I have now one ambition: to retire before it becomes essential to tweet.”
“The left are afraid of independent thinkers. They are afraid of people who are able to reason and think on their own.”
“The left are gonna calling you names. You're gonna be racist, gonna be a pig, gonna be sexist, you're gonna hate women, you're gonna hate blacks, you're gonna be anti-transgender, whatever. They'll come at you in all directions to force you into acquiescence.”
“The left are not bipartisan. Somebody give me an example of left-wing bipartisanship. They don't even define it the way we do. Bipartisanship, as they define it, as in we cave on our core beliefs and agree with them. That is bipartisanship. There is no compromise.”
“The left are not interested in what Chris Christie thinks. They're not interested in what McCain thinks. They're not interested in what Jeb Bush thinks. They're interested in eliminating everything those guys think. They don't care to get along.”
“The left are responsible for all the turmoil and the "social issues" of politics, because they're the ones constantly trying to corrupt it. And if people stand up and try to explain it, they are said to be the problem.”
“The left ask people to believe that there is no conflict between feminism and the family.”
“The left believes that we're an unwarranted, undeserving superpower because we're a racist, bigoted nation from our founding. So Obama presides over America's decline and tells everybody "get used to it. This is the new norm." The new norm is no full-time jobs. The new norm is government getting bigger. The new norm is you having no wage increases for 15 years. This is what the new norm is, as we entered the global marketplace. And the American people don't want any part of that. That's not America.”
“The left brain is perfectly fine getting on with business thank you, and processing it at a regular and predictable clip. Or at least would until the wild, chaotic, imaginative, Dionysian right brain gets wind of things, and shoots electric tendrils like instantaneous, microscopic lighting bolts across the bows of the hemisphere-separating membrane.”

“The left can't accept rejection, they can't accept defeat, and they're gonna spend the next four years [2017-2020] telling themselves they didn't lose, that Trump is illegitimate, and they're gonna have the media just dumping all over the Republicans each and every day, and who knows what role Obama's gonna play in that, but he will be playing one.”
“The left can't wait to condemn this country. The left can't wait to tell stories of how we have, I don't know, just made messes of things, as their justification for chopping us down to size and for disqualifying us superpower status. We haven't earned it. We've built our nation on the backs of slaves and other discrimination and so forth.”
“The left can't win elections without lying and without camouflage and without masks hiding who they really are. So to get their way, they have to bully.”
“The left claims that Republicans hate Hispanics, which is just the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard, and the right just claims all we need to do is close the borders and do nothing else, which is also ridiculous.”
“The left considers conservatives and Republicans to be their number one enemy, not Islam. Certainly not Islam! We conservatives and Republicans are a greater enemy that even Al-Qaeda or ISIS.”
