Allora, occorre uccidere la paura alla radice, occorre distruggere l'attitudine umana ad avere paura, estirparla dall'uomo come si tolgono le tonsille malate e delicate. Quei pensieri erano così rapidi, eterogenei e per lui nuovi da farlo cadere in un leggero stato di incoscienza, lì sul bordo del suo terrazzino, e da causargli un nuovo timore di non avere paura, come se tutti quei pensieri sull'eliminazione del pericolo costituissero un nuovo pericolo per un uomo piccolo come lui. E gli causavano davvero un senso di peso che non era in grado di sostenere e sotto il quale si piegava tutto. E si piegava, e a tratti anche provava paura, ma non si fermava, non si arrendeva. Em vez de consciência, é apenas a tua vaidade ferida que te pode estimular, porque só ela, sempre e em tudo, fala pela tua boca e determina os teus passos. (...) E ainda antes de as teres conquistado, já estás farto, porque a tua vaidade se enoja e procura qualquer outra coisa nova. Mas é precisamente isso, no facto de nada te deter, de nada te satisfazer ou saciar, que está também a tua perdição. Submetes tudo à tua viadade, mas tu próprio és o primeiro dos seus escravos e o seu maior mártir. É muito possível que venhas a obter ainda maior glória e sucesso, de certeza sucessos muito maiores do que seduzir simples raparigas entontecidas, mas nunca encontrarás satisfação em nada, porque a tua vaidade te arrastará sempre para mais longe, porque ela engole tudo, até os maiores sucessos, e logo os esquece, tal como nunca esquece as frustrações e as ofensas, por mais pequenas que sejam. E quando tudo estiver consumido, quebrado, maculado, humilhado, desintefrado e destruído à tua volta, então ficarás só nesse deserto que tu próprio criaste, cara a cara com a tua vaidade, e não terás nada para lhe oferecer. Então vais devorar-te a ti próprio, mas de nada te servirá, porque a tua vaidade, habituada a um alimento mais rico, vai desprezar-te e rejeitar-te.”
